shaking it up
All of my focus this week has been on wrapping up the above-mentioned program. Cannot wait to get it out. It's been a huge endeavour to make this a reality, and I sincerely hope it will make a difference in the lives of many folks.
The little time I've had left has been spent on designing a sauna for the backyard. We're rushing to complete the design so we can get it finished for the fall. This has always been the dream: to invite a couple of friends over and sweat it out.
The blessing and curse of creative projects for me is that I am a perfectionist and also need to make something unique. I feel compelled to nail it every time. Doesn't mean I actually succeed in this, but the compulsion remains.
The sauna has been percolating for a long time, and it's going to get real in a couple of weeks. I had one in the basement for a while, but it was so small that all the heat went out when you opened the door. This time, we want something that 5-6 people could enjoy and do it the right way.
My first iteration on this idea was 3 years ago - the sauna/tub platform we built overlooking the Chesapeake Bay at my former gig. You can barely see, but we suspended some bamboo lanterns over it, and it looked great.
All things considered, for a first crack, it was pretty good.
For this next project, I first had the idea to do a tile-covered building. I thought this would be so intriguing outdoors, and still do.
Then came reality. For where we want to put it, we can't technically build a permanent structure for the sauna, so it needs to be floating on very short posts, and I don't think it can handle all the weight of that tile.
Although it's unlikely that it would be moved in the future, this is a consideration, especially if we ever did a pool.
We'll definitely still incorporate some tile or terrazzo on the floor.
But that constraint (we love constraints around here) pushed me to the next idea—a material I've always wanted to work with but haven't had the chance to.
Cedar Shake.
I found endless incredible inpo, and a couple of folks carry it locally. We're not 100% yet on the design, but we will dial it in this coming week.

There are so many things you can do with this material!
I can't wait to show you what we're cooking up for both inside and out. Will have much more finalized next week.
(We've been working with Laura & Brian from The Sauna Place to create our Cedro Sauna, highly reccomend them if you are in the market for this kind of thing. Consummate pros)
some lights I saw this week that I like
The Gio Sconce from Humanhome. I like pieces that defy category. This straddles the line between a few different styles, is interesting without being over the top, and could work in a variety of spaces. Subtle glow that you know would look incredible on a dimmer. What's not to love?
The Pyramid Hanging Lamp by Nassi. I love that you can see the skeleton of both lights I'm sharing here. The Pyramid is one of those pieces that's so simple yet so effective in dressing up a room, kind of like striped bed sheets.
Two of these over a very long dining table would be such a good look.
