every room needs a skyline

We are about to visit Mammoth Cave, I wish I could write about that, but it will have to be next week.

If you pay attention to Instagram, maybe you've noticed I've been very light on content lately, simply due to a couple of big projects we're trying to wrap up. I really do enjoy making videos, so I can't wait to go full bore on that in the near future.

I did put out a video yesterday on the need for vertical height in your home that's resonating with many of you. I've talked about this before, but a lot of spaces don't have enough tall things. You need a variety of heights. Just doing this and allowing your eye to travel around makes a space dynamic.

Every room needs a skyline.

A floor lamp or two, a couple of pedestals, a nice tall shelf, a hanging plant. You don't think about these things because they aren't necessities, but they make a drastic difference in the dynamism of any space.

some things i saw this week

Tiles from Studio Lucy McMillan. I am constantly on the hunt for something I've never seen before. There is an incredible amount of tile I've looked at over the years, but I'm not sure if I've ever seen anything quite like these.

There's a quiet confidence to these. The relatively muted palette helps. Actually reminds me a little bit of speckled and streaked asbestos floor tile you would see in the basement of a 1950s ranch.

I found the photo below of a triple alcove shelf in Castelry's product photography. The table is nice, but as we're designing a video studio in our basement, something like this alcove shelf as a background makes a lot of sense.

In general, if you have a big expanse of plain wall space, one that is too large for art, some kind of contrast niche or alcove to display items seems like a relatively low lift. It adds so much to the architecture of your room.

The above photo is all over Pinterest, but I can't find the original source. But this is what I'm talking about.

Really functional and strikingly beautiful, and it also doesn't have to be that deep, unlike Mammoth Cave, which is very deep. More on that next week.
